Team
My name is Ana Belkis Zamora.
Born in Havana, I began my artistic career in 1978/79 with appearances at competitions and dance and theatre festivals while I was still at school. At 18 I was chosen in a casting by Olga Flora and Ramón Díaz for the “Compañía Nacional de Pantomima de Cuba” (“National Pantomime Company”) and in the following years I specialised in pantomime, acting, contemporary dance and Cuban dance.
Strict daily training in classical ballet, contemporary and Afro-Cuban dance, body expression, the techniques of Etienne Decroux and the art of Cuban pantomime led me to qualify for the “First Level” (the highest attainable stage) of the “Scenic Arts”.
I went through an intensive artistic path, always with the focus on creating my own code. My code is made of cultural independence (formal and conceptual) without displacing the European tradition. This allows me to present what is Cuban in itself, and its universal values, in an extraordinarily authentic way, as it was passed on to me by my “maestros”.
This time was of great importance for my self-understanding as an artist and dancer, because I learned to expand the imprints and movement patterns of my family and of society.
For me, an artist’s responsibility toward their audience is not only to present their work and an artistic heritage, but also to convey, with emotional intensity and seriousness, existential themes that are stored in emotional awareness.
I am in a constant process of dance-technical and artistic renewal, of enriching and perfecting my principles and concepts.
